New Radicals on All That
My daughter was watching another channel and then switched over to 'The N' which is a sort of Teen Nickelodeon channel. Well what d'ya know??? When she flipped over, the New Radicals were performing 'You Get What You Give' from on a 1999 rerun of 'All That'. We all know about the performance, but I had not seen it on the big screen.... well the 46" screen. I yelled "Hit record. Hit record!" We got the last couple minutes of the show on DVR. My favorite parts were Gregg smiling and saying "You guys are the best audience we have played to this year!" to the kids in the audience, and Danielle picking up one of the audience kids and dancing around with her and letting the girl play tamborine. At one time, they did like performing live. It made me yearn for them in a big way. As they are pushing 40 now, I doubt that we will ever see them together again, and that just makes me sad...

The further away people get from things the more they often yearn for those days. The same will one day be true for Gregg. When you're young you're restless but as you get older you want the things you threw away. The unfortunate thing is Gregg burned a lot of bridges (it seems). He abruptly ended something in the middle of its success without rhyme, reason or warning. That will make people not trust him again. I doubt people who performed with him will want to commit to playing with him if he may just fly off one day and end it. It might also be hard to get a record company to want to take a chance on them again. He'd likely have to go Indy...(I'm saying that like its a bad thing but its really not. But not having a record company means not having a lot of promotion dollars) The last job I had was the best one I ever had. Everyone loved working there and for 2 1/2 years that job was the coolest place to work. I loved it so much that in the entire time I worked there, I never took vacation. I didn't need vacation from fun. One day without warning and under a shroud of secrecy the job ended for all of us. It was a part of a large company and our department was a toy they didn't want to play with anymore. A year and a half later they decided they wanted the toy back and they called all of us up and asked us if we would all be interested in coming back if they started again. People had moved on most everyone had somewhat secure employment. Even though it was the best job ever who was to say the next time these people went on a whim they wouldn't just end it again and we'd have to start over. I didn't get to talk with everyone but those I did talk to say they were worried about going back because they'd do the same thing. No one trusted them anymore. Even the customers who got used to our service would have to be won over again if they came back. Fortunately for Gregg there is room in his "customers" hearts for more than one band and his customers do want his "service". But even we would have to know not to get used to it if they did comeback.

I remember seeing that incredibly horrible quality footage we have of that performance. It looks to be one of their best performances. I think Greg was probably being extremely serious when he said they were the best audience they had all year and that's kind of upsetting.

I think Greg was probably being extremely serious when he said they were the best audience they had all year and that's kind of upsetting. He seemed very sincere - so at the very least he loves kids. The footage I have is MUCH better quality, however it is incomplete. It starts in the middle of the artist-slamming. :(
