Daryl and John altered the lyrics a bit to make the song slightly autobiographical. Having Todd Rundgren on it also gave it a feel of the long ago for them. Having Todd on it is like having Gregg on it to me. They are quite similar in my opinion.
The NR version is more raw and youthful. D&J's version is more produced. Rumor had it that they actually asked Gregg to produce the whole Do It For Love disc and he declined as he was busy with Carly Henessey and the Santana show at the time.
The DIFL disc was actually reworked from the Sony tracks they laid down years earlier and they were going for a different sound, liking what Gregg was doing.
